Information

A skin lesion, skin naevus, mole, or pigmented naevus is a benign skin growth that appears as dark or brown spots on the skin. These spots are caused by an increased amount of pigment called melanin. Treatment is not always necessary, but it is important to monitor whether the lesion develops in an unusual way.

How a skin naevus develops

There are several types of naevi, which differ in appearance and origin. One of the most common types is the melanocytic naevus, caused by excessive production of melanin in skin cells. Although the exact cause is not fully known, genetic factors and sun exposure are known to play a significant role and may contribute to its development. A typical pigmented naevus is brown in colour with well-defined and regular borders. It may be flat or raised above the skin surface.

Non-melanocytic naevi are also common and differ mainly in colour. They are usually pink, red, brown, or yellow.

When to see a doctor

It is not necessary to visit a doctor for every naevus, but it is recommended to monitor whether it changes in shape, size, or colour. In case of suspicious changes, bleeding, or itching, you should consult a doctor, who will examine the lesion and, if necessary, recommend removal.

Reasons for removal (excision) may also be aesthetic. Self-treatment or attempting to remove naevi at home can be dangerous and does not always lead to the desired result.

Treatment options for naevi

Treatment depends on the individual case and the patient’s needs. Surgical removal is often recommended for naevi showing signs of malignancy or those that are aesthetically disturbing. At INTER MEDICO Clinic, we offer:

  • Naevus excision – surgical removal using surgical instruments
  • Laser removal – removal using a laser beam

During the consultation, the doctor will examine the naevus and suggest the most appropriate procedure. If you have a recommendation from a dermatologist, we advise you to bring it to your first appointment.

How naevus removal is performed

Local anaesthesia is applied around the naevus to numb the area, making the procedure painless. The doctor makes an incision around the naevus to remove it together with a margin of surrounding skin tissue. The method of excision depends on the size, location, and characteristics of the lesion. A scalpel, surgical scissors, or other specialised instruments may be used. After removal, the wound is closed with fine surgical sutures. Special threads are used, which either dissolve gradually or are removed during a follow-up visit.

In the case of laser removal, instead of excision, a laser device is used to precisely destroy the naevus cells.

At our clinic, we provide care beyond the scope of services covered by public health insurance. The fee for a one-time consultation, including examination and discussion of the procedure, is CZK 2,500. You can find our full price list here.
