How is the procedure performed?
The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis, does not require anaesthesia, and takes approximately 20 minutes. The patient is usually positioned on their side or back while the doctor inserts the coagulator into the rectum. The probe is applied directly to the haemorrhoid, and thermal energy (e.g. infrared light, electrical current, or radiofrequency) is used to induce coagulation (vessel closure).
As a result, the haemorrhoid is no longer supplied with blood, leading to its shrinkage, necrosis, and eventual detachment.
