When to see a proctologist for anal fissures

Anal fissures can develop suddenly and may be very painful. They are most commonly associated with constipation but can also occur as a result of diarrhoea or anal intercourse. If you experience pain, blood in your stool, or itching around the anus, it is time to consult a specialist.

Symptoms you shouldn't ignore

  • Pain during bowel movements
Pain during or after passing stool is one of the most common symptoms of an anal fissure.
  • Bleeding and itching
Blood in your stool or itching around the anus may indicate an underlying condition that should be examined.
  • Physical changes
Any lumps or thickened tissue around the anus should be assessed by a doctor.

What to expect during the examination

A proctological examination is usually quick and focuses on a visual assessment followed by a gentle physical examination. In more complex cases, we may also recommend an ultrasound examination or a tissue biopsy.

Treatment options

Conservative treatment

Non-surgical treatment includes sitz baths, stool softeners, and topical medications to relieve symptoms and support healing.

Surgical treatment

For chronic anal fissures, surgery may be recommended to relieve muscle tension and allow the fissure to heal properly.

At our clinic, we provide care beyond the scope of services covered by public health insurance. The fee for an initial consultation, including the examination and discussion of the procedure, is CZK 2,500. You can find our full price list here.
